Check out the Patterdale Weather
As well as a beautiful place for walking and relaxing, Ullswater offers a host of activities for anyone looking to make the most of life on the Lake itself. Our favourites close to the How Cottage include:
Sailing with the Glenridding Sailing Centre
Glenridding is also home to the Glenridding Sailing Centre, which offers boats and Kayaks for hire, as well as excellent sailing tuition. Pete and Steve who run the centre are just about the friendliest and most helpful people you could meet which helps as well!
A Trip on the Ullswater Steamers
No trip to the area would be complete without going on the famous Ullswater Steamers, which run regularly from Glenridding to Howtown and Pooley Bridge. If you fancy combining the trip with a walk then hop off at Howtown and walk back along the lake shore. It’s about 7 miles and a little up and down - so go prepared!
Boat Hire from St Patrick’s Boat Hire
Jared and the team will sort you out with either motor boat hire or the hire of a rowing boat if you’re feeling a little more energetic. They also have mountain bikes and fishing tackle. We recommend asking for the motor boat without the cabin and going island hopping down the lake with a picnic lunch either on one of the islands or on the beach at Silver Point. Full details at their website.
Other Useful Info
They are any number of other great things to do on and around Ullswater, including swimming and windsurfing. Please be aware that Ullswater is very cold so please take care if you are planning on going swimming and also the Lake is VERY deep and shelves steeply at the edge so take care when paddling - especially around Jenkins Field in Glenridding.
There are brown trout and other fish in the beck and the Lake. Please click here for more information on Fishing In Ullswater. You will need an EA rod licence available from the TIC.
For a full list please see the Activities on Ullswater page on the Ullswater website.
