Our Location The How cottage is in Patterdale in the Lake District Cumbria, close to Ullswater and Helvellyn and set amidst Wainwright’s Eastern Fells. All the main Lake District towns, villages and attractions including Wordsworth’s Grasmere and Beatrix Potter’s Windermere are within 40 minutes drive so there will always be something to keep all the family happy whatever the weather! Local Walks The How cottage is beautifully situated for some of the finest walks in the Lake District. It is ideally located for walking up Helvellyn, Place Fell, Angle Tarn, Fairfield, Dove Crag, St Sunday Crag and all the Eastern Fells, or mountain biking on one of the many local bridle paths in the area. Please click here for details of some of our favourite walks around Patterdale. Ullswater Attractions Ullswater, England’s most beautiful lake, is just half a mile away. The lake offers a huge range of activities to suit all, from sailing and motor boat trips, kayaking and even swimming, to simply relaxing on board the famous Ullswater Steamers. As well as the obvious walks and activities on Ullswater there are some great things to do to keep even the most active youngster amused and entertained. Eating, Drinking and Shopping Our cottage is just a 2 minute walk from the nearest pub, The White Lion in Patterdale, which serves a selection of real ales and excellent food throughout the day. Patterdale also has the excellent Patterdale Village Store and Post Office, which is open 7 days a week and sells newspapers, groceries and a range of walking gear. Nearby Glenridding also has a range of shops, pubs and hotels and an excellent local garage. In addition there are some great places to eat in some of the local villages. Nearby Glenridding has 2 local convenience stores, Catstycam, a great shop selling all kinds of outdoor equipment, several cafes and restaurants, including Fellbites. There is also a Tourist Information Centre in the Car Park in the village. Glenridding also has its own garage which has an excellent repair centre should the need arise. Windermere, Ambleside, Keswick and Penrith are all about 30 minutes drive away from the cottage. Local Wildlife The area around the cottage is a haven for wildlife. As well as the wonderful local Herdwick Sheep and local cows you’re likely to see all manner of birds including Herons and bats in the summer evenings. We also have red and grey squirrels in the wood next to the cottage, and plenty of foxes and badgers. If you’re lucky especially in the winter months you’ll see Roe and Red Deer on Place Fell and Martindale. Please click here for more details on our local wildlife.
